Using Technology to Protect Your Business: Six Tools You Need

    Business Tool

Security breaches and data leaks have serious commercial consequences. Not only do they result in revenue lost through upset customers and fewer sales, but they damage the brand and reputation of the company. Under certain circumstances, there is potential legal liability for failure to protect consumers’ sensitive information. Here are six tools that your business needs to stay safe in the digital age.

    Business Tool

    Data Encryption

Certain information, such as credit card numbers or client social security numbers, should be encrypted. Windows actually comes with an excellent security feature called BitLocker, which offers enhanced data protection through utilizing the computer’s Trusted Platform Module (TPM) microchip. The only drawback of using BitLock is that it only activates once the user has logged out of the system.

    Anti-virus and Anti-malware Software

Sometimes there is confusion about these two similar sounding programs. Viruses are malware that is designed to replicate and spread. Malware is an umbrella term for any harmful program. Every company should have robust and powerful anti-virus and anti-malware programs for their computers and even mobile phones.

    Firewall

Windows comes with its own firewall, which provides critical filtering and protection against cyber-attacks. However, Windows firewall only protects against external attacks, not internal programs. The good news is that there are free third-party firewall programs available that offer enhanced protection.

    Patching

Regular patching, or bug updates, is an important way to solve security vulnerabilities. The IT department should regularly update computers and networks with the latest patches. This will also improve usability and performance. Even smart phones require regular system updates that will protect against hackers.

    Cloud Technology

Cloud technology often appears in the form of a website that clients can access or internal software programs that employees use. Cloud computing is a great way to reduce costs while accessing universally and externally managed programs. Cloud technology actually offers enhanced security because hackers tend to focus on computers located in a physical environment.

    IT Professionals

The best level of protection comes from professional IT experts. All industries depend on technology to stay productive, access information, communicate with customers and accomplish business goals. Therefore, the best tool is to have a reliable IT services business that is focused on preventative maintenance, such as firewall protection and anti-malware services, instead of after the fact incident response.

There are certain technology tools that every company should have, such as firewalls and anti-virus and anti-malware software programs. Be sure to take advantage of data encryption, patching and cloud technology. Outside IT professionals tend to offer competitive pricing and extended services.
